Deck-Sisters

There were a couple of challenges to this design. The main entrance to the home is the front sliding glass door. The existing steps up to the deck took visitors directly to the side entrance so we needed to redirect the circulation. The second item is that the view from the entry deck is incredible but the hot tub and existing railing were having a negative impact on the view corridor.
First we added a step assembly to the front of the deck and made the side steps more hidden. Then we modified the deck space by having a sitting area at the highest point. The hot tub was placed on a lower level and skewed to the side so it was not in the view corridor. We removed the railing and installed raised planters to meet code and allow plants into the space. An intimate sitting area on the side looks over the trickling stream.

Deer have been a continuing challenge for the homeowner. The deer are eating some of the most proven resistant plants. The homeowner has used manzanita branches as a deer fence.
